Flintshire celebrates healthy pre-schools

Flintshire Awards 19.jpgThe first Flintshire Healthy & Sustainable Pre-School Scheme (HSPSS) Celebration of Achievement took place recently.

The event recognised the achievements of pre-school settings in all aspects of the scheme and their commitment to children’s health and wellbeing.

The HSPSS is a national initiative funded by Public Health Wales, coordinated in Flintshire by the Healthy Schools Scheme in the Education & Youth portfolio.

There are currently 42 settings participating in the scheme in Flintshire and they are all actively working to promote and protect all aspects of health including: physical activity, nutrition and oral health, emotional health and wellbeing, safety, hygiene and the wellbeing of their staff.

The event was opened by Claire Homard, Chief Officer for Education and Youth and presentations were delivered by Teresa Owen, Executive Director of Public Health at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and behaviour specialist, Lynn Williams, who gave an inspirational talk on behaviour in pre-school aged children.

The Awards were presented by the Chairman of the Council, Councillor Paul Cunningham, accompanied by his Consort, Mrs Joan Cunningham.  Councillor Cunningham said:

“It is an honour to present these awards this evening.  This scheme requires the pre-school settings to demonstrate that they are firmly committed to promoting health and wellbeing. This has been a fantastic event and I would like to congratulate everyone involved.”

Pre-school settings that have completed the scheme in full are: Wendy House Day Nursery in Brynford, Croft Playgroup in Aston, Flintshire Crèche Services and Treehouse Day Nursery in Flint.

Pre-school settings that have been reassessed this year include: Rocking Horse Day Nursery in Broughton, Toybox Day Nursery in Connah’s Quay, ABC Day Nursery in Cefn y Bedd, Teddybear Towers in Flint, Sunray Day Nursery in Nercwys.

Settings that have been successfully assessed for one or more health themes within the last year are: Broughton Playgroup, Cylch Meithrin in Garden City, Playdays Crèche, Lil Angels Day Nursery in Deeside, Podlings Day Nursery in Mold, Buttercups Day Nursery in Mold, Sandycroft Preschool Playgroup, First Steps Day Nursery in Alltami, Sian’s Childminding Services in Connah’s Quay, Hope Green Day Nursery in Penyffordd.
