Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)
Significant investment on CCTV has taken place in Flintshire and the success of the CCTV scheme in Flintshire can be measured by a marked increase in incident detection rates. In addition, local research into crime and disorder indicates that CCTV has contributed to reducing the fear of crime and increasing the perception of safety and security in the areas covered by the cameras. Information received from North Wales Police indicates that the introduction of CCTV in Flintshire has led to significant reductions in incidents of crime and disorder.
Surveys of public opinion show significant support for the use of CCTV within towns and communities with a high percentage of people indicating a desire for CCTV within their communities.
CCTV in Flintshire operates by utilizing 119 colour cameras which have pan, tilt and zoom capabilities. They are situated on buildings and columns throughout the County and are monitored 24 hours a day. The digital video recorders provide high quality images which assist the police in identifying offenders. Evidence is retained in accordance with Home Office guidance.
Digital recordings are controlled strictly in accordance with the CCTV Code of Practice.
Through working in partnership with North Wales Police and having direct links into their Force HQ Control Room, any detected crime can be conveyed to them instantaneously, ensuring a rapid response to incidents can be made and increasing the probability of capture.
CCTV is seen as a key tool to assisting Flintshire Community Safety Partnership in achieving its aim of securing sustainable reductions in crime and the fear of crime in local communities.
