GCSE Results 2017
Published: 24/08/2017
It has been acknowledged by Qualifications Wales and the Welsh Government that
changes in the content, structure and assessment methodology of some GCSE
examinations, including English, Welsh and Mathematics, which are being
reported for the first time this year, have impacted on the overall results
across Wales for 2017. These changes make it difficult to make meaningful
comparisons to the results from 2016.
The proportion of grades across Wales in the A* to C range in 2017 is 62.8%. In
Flintshire, these higher grade passes (A* - C) are currently at 63.5% of all
summer series examinations, including early entries, taken with the Welsh
Board. The proportion of A* and A grades achieved by Flintshire students with
the Welsh Board in 2017 is 17%, compared to 17.9% across Wales.
Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Ian Roberts said:
“On behalf of Flintshire County Council, I would like to congratulate all our
students who, despite the changes to the examinations they have sat, have
worked hard to achieve the results they have. I would also like to thank all
the parents and carers who have provided support and encouragement to their
children and school staff who have worked so hard to support their pupils. I
hope that these results will enable the students to proceed to their chosen
post-16 education courses or to find suitable employment. Whatever their next
steps, we wish them every success.”
Interim Chief Officer for Education & Youth, Claire Homard, said:
“The Council is pleased to offer its congratulations to the students, teachers,
parents and carers of Flintshire for the GCSE results achieved this year and
looks forward to seeing its young people move successfully into the next phase
of their learning journey whether it be further education, apprenticeships or
the world of work.
In this time of rapid change to the curriculum and examination structure in
Wales, education officers of the Council continue to work in strong partnership
with the Regional School Improvement Service for North Wales, GwE, to further
improve the quality of secondary school education in Flintshire and ensure that
learners achieve their potential”.
