Working with partners from local councils, health, the emergency services, third sector and others, Safeguarding Boards throughout Wales will be raising everyone’s awareness of what safeguarding means and the many situations in which it can arise.

Safeguarding is about protecting vulnerable children and adults from abuse and neglect and ensuring their wellbeing. Making sure people are supported to live full and happy lives is also an important part of safeguarding.

The theme for this year’s National Safeguarding Week is “Professional Curiousity". View "See Something, Say Something" video.

As the Council’s Champions of Corporate Safeguarding, Councillors Christine Jones and Billy Mullin, gave impassioned statements in a recent Council meeting.  Their aim was to raise awareness that everyone needs to ensure all members of our society, particularly the most vulnerable, are safeguarded against these malicious practices.

Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Social Services and Wellbeing, Councillor Christine Jones, said:

“Safeguarding adults, young people and children is a priority for the Council every day of every month.  We take seriously our responsibility to keep people safe. We all have a shared responsibility to protect children and adults at risk, whatever our role in the Council.

“The Regional Wales Safeguarding Board reports that labour exploitation is the second most common form of modern slavery in North Wales, after sexual exploitation, with the agricultural, food, hospitality and construction sectors being particularly vulnerable to forced labour practices.”

Cabinet Member for Governance and Corporate Services including Health and Safety and Human Resources, Councillor Billy Mullin, said:

“We fully support Safeguarding Week which will highlight safeguarding issues including child sexual exploitation, human trafficking, modern slavery, radicalisation and serious sexual offences.

“Initiatives taken by the Council to protect people include encouraging people to sign up to the Be Kind On-line pledge to prevent cyber bullying.  But, there is still so much to do.

Our key message is “Safeguarding is everybody’s’ responsibility” – we all need to be able to recognise the signs and know how to report our concerns. It must be at the centre of all that we do as a Council, when we work in partnership with other public bodies and, importantly, as community leaders.  It is imperative that we all have greater awareness of the issues and protect children and adults at risk.”
