School Modernisation – Brynford and Lixwm area school review

Published: 15/06/2018

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet will consider the responses from the statutory consultation period for the Brynford and Lixwm Area school review and determine the next steps for any school organisational change in the area at its meeting on Tuesday, 19 June. Despite seeking a federation with another school, Lixwm Community Primary School was unable to establish a federal partner. Therefore, Cabinet agreed to proceed to statutory consultation on school organisational change in January on the proposal to amalgamate Brynford and Lixwm Community Primary Schools to create a single area school. The consultation, run in compliance with the statutory School Organisation Code, has been extensive. The review needs now to be brought to a conclusion to end uncertainty in the local communities. Cllr. Ian Roberts, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth said; “Reviewing the future of any school is emotive and this has been a challenging review with strong community resistance from Lixwm to the proposed change. We, as a Council however, have to balance the sensitivities of community feeling whilst ensuring our schools network remains viable and sustainable and it is essential that the Council addresses the issue of inadequate school buildings at Brynford School. “Whichever option the Cabinet favours there will need to be a sustainable model of primary education within and across the two communities. The Cabinet is giving careful and thoughtful consideration to the options before it.”
