Flintshire schools' Pride event returns
Published: 23/07/2024
Hawarden High School hosted their second annual celebration as part of Pride month – a nationwide initiative that advocates for LGBTQ+ equality and consciousness.
The staff and learners, along with the Council’s Healthy Schools team and Youth Service, once again organised an inclusive and inspiring event. Vibrant decorations, including bunting, rainbow flags and balloon arches transformed the school into a colourful, celebratory atmosphere to set the stage for the day’s celebrations.
LGBTQ+ ambassadors from the school welcomed approximately 250 attendees which included learners from secondary schools across the county and representatives from over 30 LGBTQ+ charities and organisations.
After an inspiring speech from Leaola Roberts-Biggs from the Youth Parliament and Hannah Blythyn, MS for Delyn, learners were divided into mixed groups to participate in themed workshops run by providers including Theatr Clwyd, the Children's Commissioner, Unique, and Flintshire Youth Services.
Flint High’s school production of Everyone’s Talking About Jamie captivated the afternoon audience with its fantastic vocals and dramatic flair. The fun continued with performances from Hawarden High School choir and a lively Zumba routine from Aura Leisure.
The highlight of the afternoon was the return of Taylor Martin, a freelance actor, who once again appeared as their drag persona Mel Teaser.
Councillor Mared Eastwood, Cabinet Member for Education, Welsh Language and Culture said: “Events such as these are critical in promoting this message across our school communities. Flintshire County Council is committed to eradicating prejudice and intolerance, and ensuring that diversity is welcomed and celebrated. I would like to extend my gratitude to all those who contributed to the event.”
