Education Provision in the Saltney and Broughton Area
Published: 30/09/2024
Flintshire County Council is committed to investing in education for the Broughton and Saltney area following engagement with the community.
More than 1,500 people responded to an early engagement exercise to gauge the views of the community to shape the future of educational provision in the area.
The consultation revealed that the community understands the need for change, but predominantly wishes for the Council to retain their existing schools and provide refurbishment and/or extensions to the current buildings.
Following a commitment from Cabinet to continue to support investment into Flintshire education, it has been agreed to put capital investment into St David’s High School to address capacity issues and support teaching and learning improvements through a major programme of refurbishment and refiguration.
Primary school data indicates that two out of the three current English medium community primary schools in the Saltney and Broughton area would be sufficient to meet pupil demand and create a more sustainable model of provision for the future, the Council’s preferred option is that Saltney Ferry C.P. and Saltney Wood Memorial C.P. are amalgamated into one school on the current Wood Memorial site in a brand new, state of the art education facility with Broughton C.P. remaining as it is.
The Council recognises that decisions like this can have significant impact on communities and are made with very careful consideration – the overall objective is to always ensure a high-quality education offer and the best use of financial resources. A full public consultation on these proposed changes for the primary schools is expected to take place during Autumn 2024.
The Council has welcomed the active contribution of the local Councillors and local communities in Saltney and Broughton to its early engagement consultation and will continue to work closely with the schools in the area and local residents to further develop a vibrant and modern learning offer that delivers the best outcomes for students.
