New online dementia information available
Published: 10/09/2019
Flintshire County Council hasadded new information to their website for those living with dementia in and their carers.
The information includes dementia friendly locations, support services, safety, leisure and entertainment, carers’ support, transport, waste and recycling and housing.
This information is a result of feedback from people living with dementia and their carers who have found it difficult to find out what support may be available to them in Flintshire.
It is hoped that this will bring a range of information together in one place, acting as a directory of support services. People living with dementia and their carers, health and social care professionals and others will be able to go to the Council webpages to access helpful information, instead of spending time searching the websites of partner agencies and Council departments. The pages will continue to be updated as we learn more about local support.
Jo Lane, Dementia Friendly Communities Coordinator for Alzheimer’s Society, said:
“This is an excellent initiative which very much fits in with our mission to create more dementia-friendly communities.
“Bringing helpful information together in one place will certainly make life easier for anyone affected by the condition, so it’s great to see the council taking account of what people affected by dementia have said.
“We want people living with dementia to feel understood, respected, supported, and confident they can contribute to community life.
“We’re working hard to effect change so it’s extremely encouraging to see other organisations unite with us against dementia.
“There are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, almost 2,000 of them in Flintshire, and it’s vitally important to support them in every way we can.”
Jim Ibell, Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society and a Flintshire resident living with dementia, said:
“I really cannot say thank you enough to Flintshire County Council for acting so quickly. It was only in July that I mentioned putting something together, where all related information to support someone living with dementia in one place and straight away Flintshire County Council is including it on their web page, which is great.
“I have been talking about trying to get this done for months at different meetings I have been to around North Wales and at last it has been acted on. This will be such a great help to people living with dementia, I think this is the only document that includes many things all together that we need to know. Also, it is really good to see Flintshire County Council moving towards becoming a dementia friendly organisation. This will help all the people in Flintshire that are living with dementia.”
Flintshire County Council has been recognised as ‘Working Towards Becoming Dementia Friendly’ though the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friendly Communities Programme.
Alzheimer's Society's Dementia Friendly Communities and Organisations programme aims to encourage everyone to share responsibility for ensuring that people with dementia feel understood, valued and able to contribute to their community. This focuses on improving inclusion and quality of life through training and awareness raising within communities and organisations so they are better able to respond to the needs of those living with Dementia and their Carers.
Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Services, Councillor Christine Jones, said:
“Dementia features as a priority in a number of corporate plans. I’m proud of the dedication of Flintshire County Council staff and their partner organisations who continue to work hard to ensure that we continue to raise awareness and support people with dementia and their carers.
The Council Plan 2017-23 commits to further developing dementia support and awareness across the county by:
- increasing the number of dementia friendly communities in Flintshire; and
- working in partnership to support people living with dementia in the community.
