New school for new term at Penyffordd
Published: 11/09/2019
The new multi-million pound Ysgol Penyffordd has welcomed pupils for the new term.
This was celebrated recently at an event attended by councillors, officials and representatives of the local contractor, Bodelwyddan based Wynne Construction at the 21st century primary school site.
The work forms part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme and follows the successful completion of Holywell Learning Campus and Deeside 6th Form College and the modernisation and improvement works at Connah’s Quay High School.
The new school is a 3-11 English medium community primary school on the Abbotts Lane site and includes classrooms to accommodate nursery, foundation phase and key stage 1 and 2 for 315 pupils as well as a hall and studio.
Flintshire County Council’s Leader and Cabinet Member for Education and Youth, Councillor Ian Roberts, said:
“This is another milestone in the provision of the 21st Century Schools programme in Flintshire. This investment of almost £7 million provides a wonderful modern facility for children, young people and the wider community and provides a new inspirational learning experience for primary school children.”
Head teacher, Jayne Mulvey, said:
“We are thrilled to begin the new school year in this fantastic building. There has been a great deal of excitement as we planned for, and watched the building progress over the past three years, and it is now very rewarding to see the design ideas from Wynne Construction, the staff and pupils being realised in such a unique learning space. The building is stunning, both visually and as a working environment. The facilities inside and out are state-of-the-art; we have been given a learning facility which is more than we could ever have hoped for. It will serve our pupils and the village community very well for many years.
We are immensely grateful to Flintshire County Council and the Welsh Government for funding this project and are thankful to have been working with Wynne Construction, who we found to be considerate and perceptive throughout the design and construction process.
“It has taken a great deal of hard work by all associated with the school to prepare for the opening in September. Seeing the excitement and awe on pupils’ faces upon entering the school for the first time recently was something staff will never forget, and we look forward to enjoying this wonderful learning facility in the years to come.”
Chris Wynne, managing director, Wynne Construction, said:
“We are very proud to have delivered the new Ysgol Penyffordd scheme and to be, once again, working in partnership with Flintshire County Council. Our collaboration with all parties involved has created an excellent facility and in addition, we have been able to provide training and job opportunities for the local construction workforce.”
