Art in the Library – Lliw yn y Llyfrgell
Mold Library
Published: 21/05/2015
Talented Flintshire glass artist, Sylvia Davies, is currently exhibiting her
stunning glass pieces at Mold Library.
This is part of the series of exhibitions Art in the Library – Lliw yn y
Llyfrgell which aims to support local artists and crafters, some of which have
never exhibited before, by giving them a platform to showcase their work to the
public.
Throughout the year the exhibition programme at Flintshire’s Libraries will
include paintings by Angie Hoopert, Emma-Jayne Holmes and Clayton Langford,
drawings by Scott Bongo’s and photography by Ceridwen Barkley.
Sylvia Davies says about her work:
“I work as an artisan in glass and have been fortunate enough to learn about
glass art from some of the local masters of the craft. Widely acclaimed
contemporary glass artist and designer Jan Singleton of Pandy Mill took me in
hand and taught me how to cut glass, copper foil and solder a piece. Ian
Hartless who, as well as running his own stained glass business and teaching at
a local college, is currently involved with the restoration of the Anglican
Cathedral in Liverpool, showed me how to make leaded lights.
In 2010 I attended a Glass Fusing and Slumping course run by Jenny Barker of
Melt Designs Liverpool who is also currently Head of Glass Design at North East
Wales Institute. Here I learned some of the diverse and exciting techniques
and processes of hot glass working. Each piece of work is unique having been
hand crafted and then kiln fired (some several times), or else foiled or leaded
then soldered.
I like to make items that have some practical use such as fruit bowls and
colourful name plates for bedroom doors etc. but I also enjoy making something
that can create light and movement, that amazing effect of sunlight through
coloured glass.”
The exhibition can be seen in the craft cabinets at Mold Library.
Councillor Chris Bithell, Cabinet Member for Education, said:
I am proud that Flintshire County Councils Arts, Culture and Events team and
our Libraries service are continuing to support our local talent - showcasing
their work and supporting our artists as businesses.
