Auction of Art and Promises for the Urdd
Published: 01/07/2015
An Arts and Crafts Auction of works by artists, crafters and makers from the
region of the 2016 Urdd Eisteddfod, and the surrounding areas, will take place
on Friday 10 July at 7pm at Connah’s Quay’s Civic Hall.
In 2016 the Urdd National Eisteddfod will be held in Flintshire. This is cause
for celebration and pride amongst the residents of the area. With its
fascinating history, its unique buildings, scenery, its light, its colours and
shapes, the County of Flintshire is a place famous for its artists, crafters,
designers and makers.
The Art, Design and Technology Committee was set up a few months ago to plan
and make the necessary arrangements involved in holding an exhibition of
children’s creative work at the Urdd Gobaith Cymru National Eisteddfod in
Flintshire in 2016. One of the duties of the Committee will be to raise funds
to stage the exhibition along with making a financial contribution towards the
Eisteddfod’s overall costs.
At the auction, there will be an opportunity to bid on 58 items that have been
donated by artists, crafters and the local community.
The items will be available to view from 6pm on the evening of the auction.
Tickets for the event cost £5 and include light refreshments and entertainment
as well as the opportunity to purchase an original artwork while raising money
for this fantastic cause.
The full catalogue of donations can be seen on the Urdd website with an
opportunity to bid on the lots online. Donations include a stunning giclee
print of Moel Fammau by Mold based artist Angie Hoopert; a signed Wales
football shirt; photographs by nationally renowned photographer Llinos Lanini;
a framed print of Eryri by John Morris; a painting of Noel Gallagher by local
artist Clayton Langford; a series of collograph prints of Flintshire landmarks
by Emma Jayne Holmes and a beautiful framed original artwork of Basingwerk
Abbey by internationally known artist Jan Gardner, as well as many more items.
Cllr Chris Bithell, Cabinet Member for Education at Flintshire County Council,
said:
“The Urdd Eisteddfod is one of Europe’s largest youth touring festivals ,
attracting around 90,000 visitors each year, and in May 2016 it will be held
in Flint, during Whitsun week.
“It is a competitive festival with over 15,000 children and young people under
the age of 25 competing during the Eisteddfod week in various competitions,
such as singing, dancing and performing. They are the elite few from around
40,000 competitors across Wales who have won their place following local and
regional rounds held in the spring months leading up to the Eisteddfod.
“Urdd Eisteddfod week is the pinnacle of around three years hard work by local
volunteers, and it is a real privilege to welcome this national event to
Flintshire.”
