Pupils design a school lunch for County’s school children
Published: 14/07/2015
Two Flintshire school pupils have won a county wide competition to design a
school lunch.
The Design a School Lunch competition has been organised by the Flintshire
School Meals Service, to celebrate how great school meals are. The winning
dishes – a main and a dessert dish – will both feature on the school lunch menu
for 2015/16.
Children entering the competition were encouraged to individually design either
a main course or a dessert. The dishes needed to incorporate aspects of The Eat
Well Plate. The competition was open to all Primary pupils in Flintshire
schools and was free to enter.
Entries were all assessed on the recipe name, the fruit and vegetable content,
the use of ingredients and the cost- dishes needed to be £2 or less per portion.
The winning entries were Eben Wyn Williams, Year 5, from Ysgol Glanrafon in
Mold, for his Lasagne Selsig, and Sophie Williams, Year 5, from Ysgol Derwen,
Higher Kinnerton, for her Pear and Blueberry Slice.
Cllr Bernie Attridge, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment recently
presented both winning pupils with a £100 Argos voucher each, provided by
Little Food Company, and the two winning schools have received £500 to develop
the school’s canteen experience.
Cllr Attridge said:
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our primary school pupils to make their
mark and design a school lunch which will now be available, and enjoyed, at
schools across the County in the next school year. It is important that we
engage with children about food, and show them how healthy meal choices can
also be fun. My thanks go to all those children who took part, and
congratulations in particular to the winners, Eben and Sophie, for their
inspiring and creative menus.”
