Flintshire’s Coastal Communities to benefit from Lottery Funding
Published: 27/07/2015
Flintshire County Council has recently been awarded just under £300,000 from
the Big Lottery Coastal Communities Fund to undertake a range of improvements
across various locations along Flintshire’s coastline.
The Coastal Communities Fund seeks to support projects that will contribute to
the regeneration of coastal areas. In Flintshire the schemes to be supported
include:
· improvements to the Flintshire section of the Wales Coast Path.
· creating a safe and secure pedestrian route between Wepre Park and the Wales
Coast Path.
· creating a link route between the Offas Dyke national trail and the Wales
Coast Path.
· improving visitor infrastructure at key hubs such as Talacre, Greenfield Dock
and Flint.
· the provision of accredited environmental traineeships for 30 local
unemployed people.
· promoting the Dee coastline and its attractions as a tourist destination.
· organising an event to celebrate the heritage, culture and environment of the
coast.
Cllr Derek Butler, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said:
“This is a welcome investment for Flintshire’s coast, as we recognise that the
Dee Estuary is a valuable asset for the county. This will enable the County
Council and its partners to build on the good work that has been undertaken to
date, and further exploit the opportunities that the coast provides for
tourism, leisure, local business and the coastal communities themselves”.
Councillor Bernie Attridge, Cabinet Member for Environment said:
“The Flintshire part of the Wales Coast Path is rich with heritage and with
each section having its own history it tells a great story about the region.
Since it was opened the Wales Coast Path has brought many more visitors to the
area. The new schemes that are to be undertaken will further enhance the path
and provide further opportunities for visitors to enjoy the countys
fascinating coastline and explore further inland too.
The activities will be delivered by a partnership comprising Flintshire County
Council, Groundwork North Wales and Dangerpoint Ltd. The activities will be
implemented over a 12 month period starting in early 2016.
The Coastal Communities Fund is funded by the Government with income from the
Crown Estate’s marine assets. It is delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on
behalf of UK Government and the Devolved Administrations in Northern Ireland,
Scotland and Wales.
