Wepre War Memorial

A ceremony to mark the completion of major improvements to the Wepre War Memorial and Wepre Bridge in Connahs Quay will take place on Tuesday 4 August. The memorial has been carefully cleaned and renovated together with the introduction of new paving and lighting which has enhanced the overall site. The project has been funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. The war memorial is vested with Flintshire County Council, with commemorative events there organised by the Connahs Quay and Shotton Interservices Committee. Work to the memorial was carried out by Grosvenor Construction whilst GH Lewis & Sons upgraded the paving area. Council Leader Aaron Shotton said: Its wonderful to see the improvements to this historic memorial. Im pleased that the site has been so painstakingly renovated and the areas around it so carefully enhanced for the benefit of people in the local community. Background information The War Memorial was dedicated in May 1927 on land given by the trustees of the Wepre Hall Estate and was supplied and erected by local Connah’s Quay stonemason, Mr. Edward Jones. It cost in the region of £1,000. In a cavity beneath the base there is an oak box containing a sealed bottle and inside it a sheet of parchment detailing the history of the memorial and the names of the committee and ex-service men, by whose efforts it was raised; the box also contains newspapers and military badges and buttons of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and other Regiments. The opening ceremony was performed by Colonel T. H. Parry who in his address said This memorial was a sacred memorial and it would soon be so dedicated. Let all present, irrespective of age, so regard it. Let them see not a finger is put on it to mar it any way. Let them see that the names upon it now would be equally as visible for future generation to see.”
