Healthy Homes Healthy People

The new Flintshire County Council Healthy Homes Healthy People initiative aims to improve partnership working across many different organisations including Care and Repair NE Wales , North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and North Wales Energy Advice, in taking a holistic approach to improve the health, well-being and safety of residents living in private rented accommodation by bringing about improvements in their living conditions. Flintshire County Councils Environmental Health Team have recently been working in partnership with North Wales Police to target properties in poor condition in the Connahs Quay area. As part of this initiative two properties, 341 and 343, High Street Connahs Quay, located in a three storey building which had been poorly converted in to several flats were recently visited. During the course of the visit it was found that there was a non-working fire alarm system , defective and dangerous electrics and no fixed heating in either of the flats. Both the flats were immediately closed following the visit because of the risk to the safety of the tenants, who have been temporarily re-housed by the Council . Housing Officers are currently assisting these tenants to find alternative accommodation. Councillor Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Public Protection said: People living in private rented accommodation are entitled to expect their accommodation to be safe, secure and properly heated and the Healthy Homes Healthy People initiative will help focus the energies of all partners in targeting those landlords who fail to meet their responsibilities to their tenants As of 23 November 2015 new legislation in Wales now requires all landlords, letting and managing agents to register with Rent Smart Wales www.rentsmart.gov.wales. This new licensing aims to improve the management of rented property Wales.
