WLGA Manifesto

The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) recently published its Manifesto for local government, Localism 2016-21, a 40 point plan for public services in Wales, in advance of the National Assembly for Wales elections to be held in May, 2016. The WLGA Manifesto calls for clarity from the Welsh Government about the future of local government, its roles and responsibilities and around the plans for reform, fair and flexible funding and for a commitment to the principle of ‘Subsidiarity’, where it is presumed that power is transferred to the level of government closest to the people. Cllr. Aaron Shotton, Leader of the Council said, Much support has been shown for our determined and measured approach in making representations to the Welsh Government for its understanding and assistance in addressing the challenges faced by the Council. This reflects growing momentum from individuals, groups and organisations to work with us to protect essential services and facilities. “In its recent Provisional Settlement for local government the Welsh Government has clearly accepted the strong case made by the WLGA family for a slow down in the scale and pace of budget cuts and that was widely welcomed. “The Welsh Government has a clear national strategic role, but Flintshire and other councils want to see momentum behind the devolution of powers to local government and to local communities.” At its meeting on Tuesday, 19 January the Council’s Cabinet will consider an invitation from the WLGA to formally support its Manifesto and to engage with the WLGA and other councils in working with a newly elected Welsh Government in May to promote adoption of the Manifesto proposals in national policy and funding plans.
