Development of Shotton Master Plan

Published: 11/02/2021

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet will discuss the potential to develop a Master Plan for the Shotton area when it meets on Tuesday 16 February.

Shotton is a key town in Flintshire with good local facilities and excellent transport links to the local and regional bus, rail, active travel and highway networks. There are also many areas within the town that have significant potential for development opportunities.

Over the past few years, there have been a growing number of concerns about antisocial behaviour and other environmental issues which, if left unchecked, could blight the area.  These are undermining local efforts to keep the town clean and tidy and to ensure that it remains a place where people want to live, visit and work.

To maximise potential opportunities, a proposal has been tabled to look at the possible development of a Shotton Master Plan which would be overseen by a Steering Group made up of local County Councillors and key local stakeholder groups.   The Council has already made considerable investments in the area, including Hwb Cyfle Adult Day Centre, a brand new £11m Plas Derwen (the Pupil Referral Unit), Ty Calon (Community Hub) and Queensferry Primary School refurbishment.  It also has plans for the future of Shotton Station and Deeside Leisure Centre, all of which shows commitment to the future of the wider area.

Flintshire County Council’s Leader, Councillor Ian Roberts, said:

“Shotton, as a community, has many advantages as well as issues that we need to work to address.  We are hoping to develop a plan which can be realistic and aspirational for this key community in our county.  In this, it will be vital that we then listen to the views of the community when drawing up the Master Plan.”

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Councillor Derek Butler, said:

“The Plan would bring the right people together with the aim of looking at ways of regenerating and delivering the required improvements to the town centre.  This would include looking a possible funding streams to facilitate the work.”
