Beach clean-up success

Flintshire County Council’s Countryside Service organised a Beach Clean-up event with Keep Wales tidy on 27 April. This was part of the fourth annual Clean Coast Week organised by Keep Wales Tidy and sponsored by McDonald’s. Over 20 volunteers, including staff from McDonalds and the Council, picked up around 15 bags of rubbish in just two hours along the stretch of beach and sand dunes between Talacre and Presthaven Sands. Some volunteers spent time counting and spraying dog mess across the same area. In less than 5 hours, they found and sprayed 307 separate incidents of dog fouling. This was done to raise awareness of this issue on the site and try to change peoples’ attitudes. Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Bernie Attridge, said: “Flintshire is pleased to be involved in initiatives such as this. It is vitally important to keep our beaches and tourist areas free from litter and dog fouling, not only to encourage visitors to our beautiful area, but also to keep it clean and hygienic for local residents. Our officers were able to talk to people about these issues and members of our Streetscene team came to pick up the bags of rubbish.” Flintshire County Council Countryside Ranger, Tim Johnson, said: “The day was a real success. People pulled together to make a difference. People need to be aware of the problems not picking up after your dog causes, so will now roll this out to other sites. Dogs Trust was also on site and they microchipped 34 dogs and checked many more as well as giving advice.
