Putting Flintshire on the map

Published: 25/06/2021

Geoplace 1.pngIt's official, Flintshire is on the map and has been recognised in the GeoPlace Exemplar Awards 2021.

Many of us associate mapping with planning or the environment, but advances in digital technology now means every address in the UK can be pin pointed by a unique property reference number (UPRN), similar to a National Insurance number which is unique to one person.

The GeoPlace Exemplar Awards recognise Councils across the UK who are providing and using good quality address and street data. This could be to plan and deliver large transformation projects affecting large geographical areas or small projects, affecting specific groups of people.

Excellent addressing and accurate street data can make a real difference to people’s lives.

In Flintshire, we supported local people during the Covid-19 situation by:

  • Allocating care to people in their own homes who were either unable to get out or were shielding;
  • Supporting people with dementia and their family and carers by locating dementia friendly events and services.
  • In partnership with FLVC, we provided residents with a map where they could identify and click on local services such as food deliveries, pharmacies and mental health services.

When announcing Flintshire’s Highly Commended award GeoPlace LLP said:

“The team at Flintshire has worked on a multitude of projects that deliver a better level of service both for residents and staff, using the UPRN to create a map to highlight local services in response to Covid-19 … Also working to pinpoint data for care providers and an accessible map to provide information about Dementia Friendly Organisations.“

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Management & Assets Councillor Billy Mullin said:

“To be the only Welsh Council recognised in this category, against must larger English counties, is a significant achievement for Flintshire.

“I am proud of the way we have used modern technology, in a very practical way, to help support our residents and communities.

“Having seen the benefits over this past year, it is certainly something we are committed to developing and will look to introduce digital mapping solutions across a range of different council services.”
