Open doors event - behind the scenes at The Old Rectory and Hawarden Village trails
Published: 16/08/2016
On Saturday 10 September Flintshire Record Office, based at the Old Rectory,
Hawarden, is taking part in ‘Open Doors’, a Wales-wide event organised by Cadw.
Open Doors offers both local people and visitors alike the chance to explore
the hidden treasures of Wales’ culture and history.
The Old Rectory is an 18th century building set within its own grounds, which
was home to the Rectors of Hawarden for centuries. For the past 60 years, it
has housed Flintshire Record Office, which seeks to preserve the countys
unique archival heritage and make it available to the public.
The Open Doors event will include an exhibition about historic buildings in
Hawarden (including the Old Rectory); tours ‘behind the scenes’ of the Old
Rectory to see where the County’s archives are kept; visits to the Conservation
studio to see how the unique and irreplaceable archives are preserved; and
guided walks around Hawarden village following an historic buildings trail, led
by a knowledgeable member of staff.
Cllr. Chris Bithell, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth said;
“This is a marvellous opportunity for the public to find out more about the
fascinating processes, skills and expertise that are required to preserve the
County’s archives and to find out more about the architectural gem of a
building and setting where this important work is conducted.
