Kick-off for Walking Football in Flintshire

Published: 19/01/2017

Walking Football, a slow-paced version of the beautiful game has arrived in Flintshire thanks to a unique partnership between Gap Connah’s Quay in the Community, Flintshire Exercise Referral and Leisure Services. Sessions will take place every Tuesday, 1.45pm – 2.45pm, at Deeside Leisure Centre, costing only £2, and during the Winter months will be played on an indoor, sprung sports hall floor, switching to the outdoor 3g pitches in the Spring. Those wanting to stay afterwards for a social cuppa can take advantage of a tea or coffee and a tea cake for just £1.80. Originally designed to help get over 50s back into football players of all ages are now being encouraged to take part and increase physical activity through rekindling players love for the game. The rules have been adapted so there is no running, very little contact and kick- ins instead of throw-ins. With less stress on the body and no real sudden change of direction or cutting movements the game allows participants to play without apprehension and at their own pace. Playing the game at walking pace is a fantastic way to keep fit, reduce chances of injury and falls and also is a great way to meet new people. Cllr. Kevin Jones, Cabinet Member for Leisure said; “Walking Football provides an excellent opportunity for all members of the community to take part in one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. Since 2011, football clubs up and down the country have been running sessions and there are currently over 400 clubs, with many leagues operating organised fixtures. We hope to encourage as many people as possible to play the beautiful game, whatever standard they are, they are all welcome at walking football’’ Head of Gap In The Community Lee Breeze said; “We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with the Flintshire Exercise Referral Team on delivering the Walking Football programme based at Deeside Leisure Centre. To be able to offer this as part of our community programme and to have the benefit of the expertise Flintshire Exercise Referral Team offer is both a feather in the cap for Gap In The Community and the Walking Football players that take part in the sessions. We look forward to building on the partnership in the future” Everyone is welcome to attend so dust off your football kit and give it a go!
