Published: 07/06/2022
Flintshire County Council would like to congratulate all Flintshire students who took part in this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod.
In March this year, 946 children and young people from 7 Urdd clubs, 12 primary schools and 4 secondary schools/colleges from Flintshire registered to compete in the Urdd County Eisteddfod. This included the stage competitions and the Arts, Design and Technology competitions.
Flintshire’s recently appointed Chair, Councillor Mared Eastwood, attended on the Saturday to support a young person from one of our Youth Clubs who was competing for the first time. She said:
“I was delighted to attend and support our young people at this year’s Urdd. The fact that young people from our Youth Clubs were competing is a great success story for our youth provision – offering them the introduction to Welsh opportunities through our services with our support.”
Many of the young people representing their school or club went on to win in their chosen competition, including Alana Stevens and Awen Grug Hogg (both for recitation), Beca Fflur Hogg (girl’s solo) and Aelwyd Yr Wyddgrug (team public speaking).
There was also much to celebrate in the Arts, Design and Technology competition, with the following coming out on top for Flintshire: Elis Ashford and Erin Parks (both for drawing) and Megan Griffiths (fashion).
There were lots of second and third places awarded to Flintshire students during the week – the full list can be seen below.
Flintshire’s Leader and Cabinet Member for Education and Cabinet Member for Education, Welsh Language, Culture and Leisure, Councillor Ian Roberts, said:
“Congratulations to all of the students from Flintshire who took part in this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod. You should all be very proud. Flintshire has a strong commitment to the Welsh language and through our Welsh in Education Plan, we support people of all ages to improve their Welsh language skills and to give them the confidence to use the language in their daily lives.
“As we all continue to recover from the pandemic, it is a great achievement that so many of our young people were able to compete this year.”
