Over 400 people attended a jobs, skills and training event held over two days at Connah’s Quay Civic Hall recently. The event was aimed at adults and young people seeking work and it proved to be another successful collaboration between Flintshire Communities First, Jobcentre Plus and Careers Wales. The event was supported by 32 providers and 31 employers with over 300 vacancies available in a variety of sectors. Feedback from providers (these include education establishments, training providers and organisations offering volunteering opportunities) showed that the quality of the candidates and level of engagement was higher than last year, with more opportunity to have one to one discussions. Because of the high calibre of attendees, some employers wanted to interview them there and then on the day. As well as applying for the many vacancies on offer, jobseekers were able to meet with and put questions to employers, learning providers and many other support organisations. Two workshops were held during the event. One workshop, delivered by North Wales Training, worked with the attendees on improving their team building skills. The other workshop, delivered by the Meee Project, focussed on employment, education and enterprise. The Meee Project (My Education, Employment and Enterprise) offers specially designed workshops which teach techniques for coping with the stress and anxiety many feel when they lose a sense of where they fit in - whether in school, work or wider society. Both workshops were well attended and feedback from attendees and those presenting was very positive. Flintshire County Council’s Chief Officer for Community and Enterprise, Clare Budden, said: “Once again, this interactive event was a great success and gave attendees the opportunity to meet employers, education establishments and support agencies. Employers tell us that these events are a positive experience for them too. It’s crucial for businesses that they attract and recruit the right person for the job. Events such as this give them the opportunity to do that.”
