Potholes, Pavement and Road Defects

We carry out regular inspections throughout the year of all our adopted roads and pavements.

Potholes can develop over a very short time and even appear between inspections, which may mean the council is not aware.

We can't repair potholes on private or unadopted roads.

Reporting a pothole or pavement/road defect

Please provide as much information about the pothole or pavement/road defect as possible, including:

  • the type of defect (e.g. pothole, damaged kerb, road markings)
  • the location
  • any photos/videos

What happens next

Reported defects are assessed and where they meet the intervention criteria set out in the Highway Inspection Policy, repairs will be undertaken.

The time take to repair a pothole will be based on a measure of risk. A pothole with potential to cause injury or an accident will be repaired immediately, all other potholes that meets our invention criteria will be programmed for repair.

Copies of any photographs of the defect and the surrounding area, to help us to identify the location, are also helpful.
